Friends of Long ago - 60 years ago

 Dear Friends of Long ago and Today Feb 27  2023  

Wow 

         60 years ago ..... I was still calling Zanzibar  "Home"  and I  was going  "HOME"  after my Last exams  for BA Hons Geog.  in March, and yes I passed and went through the Ceremony I posted pictures of before

  

Then later  came the taking of  a couple of pictures someone took of me alone   and with couple of friends on either side of me  both MD Doctors Mulago Hospital Med School    Dr Narendra Sood  is now in Detriot Michighan his wife also Md  also Grad of Makerere.  He sent me his latest family pictures recently.    On my other side was Dr Lavoisier Cardozo Jinja  my assigned  "boyfriend" for the first few years ..it is what was a practice according to   Braz Menezes   stories in his Mata Books    I insisted we be  Just Goo friends after 1961..  when I able to speak up for myself.   I had to say  I was not happy about being Yoked  "tied" down  or anyhting like that as it made no sense.  I had to think of what life would be like 1964  for my family. My Dad was 66- and would be 68 in 1962-  a much younger Lafayette, the MD Dad of Dr Lavo Cardozo  an only son, tragically died suddenly,  leaving his Mom a widow with a young daughter.   

1963 September  I began the Diploma in Education  with a couple of Zanzibar Students .. Rozy  Visram was one.. and Herman Lupogo was Tangayika Dar Es Salaam Pugu.    Did we ever dream, and  could we have imagined 1964 any more than we can imagine .... 2024?

The  T E A Program  had been designed and planned by UK Dev  US Peace Corps   Columbia Teachers and ..had the blessing of JFK.. He was assinated Nov 22.. and Jan 12  came The REVOLUTION.. and April  1964 wehad the New Nation  Merger  TAN ZAN NIA... going strong maybestronger .. as we see from Mohamed Lodhi's  posting on the $ 45 Million Beach front development and last year's Report that the Tallest  Tower in the world will also be built in Zanzibar.. and that major Airport Development is planned or already in place..

 

Mohamed  I did fin the handwritten card given to me by the former Sanzibar Student I identified as   "Mohamed Shasky"  in the Photo you psoted months ago.. but his name as You corrected is  SAID SALIM SHAKSY  ..  he gave a PO Box  numbr  for Muscat  Oman and his Tel numbers   should My husband I I ever went there.   That was  41years  ago.. I can enver forget my surprise to see someone "Middle aged" as was I shouting to me in the spectacular Sheraton Heliopolis   "Miss Pinto!   Miss Pinto !"

Going down Memory lane into  such ... MEMORIES  .. keeps me going on an on ..into  my albums and  what many would consider  "stuff" in my various closets ...  dreams did come true  and so did unexpected   "Dead End...Blank  Invisible but real " blocks " Barriers Boundaries..!

But there is no stopping the Flights of Fancy that go Straight UP Up Up  and away..
